Vivian Demuth was educated in the Rocky Mountains where she has lived and worked as a park ranger/warden, firelookout, outdoor educator and citizen scientist for over twenty years. She has degrees in Science, Fine Art, English and Creative Writing. As a poet/fiction writer, artist/naturalist, her work has appeared in various Canadian, U.S., Mexican and European anthologies and journals, including: The Aleph Review, Grain, Lake, Room, In the Company of Animals; Stories of Extraordinary Encounters, The Boreal Factor, Nose Mountain Moods, Writing the Land: Alberta through its Poets, Powwow: Short Fiction from Then to Now, Hampton Shorts, Long Shot, The Prairie Journal, The Canadian Alpine Journal, Political Affairs, Logos: A Journal of Modern Society and Culture, Other Voices, Ciclo Literario, Poetics for the More-Than-Human World, and La Revue Commune.
Vivian’s poetry book Fire Watcher made the list of final nominees for the 2013 Banff Mountain Fiction and Poetry Award. In April, 2013, Vivian was among 30 Poets featured by the Literary Press Group of Canada for her book, Fire Watcher. She is the recipient of the Sarah Tucker Fiction award from Long Island University.

Vivan is a member of PEN and the Writers Union of Canada, as well as an associate member of the League of Canadian Poets. With the assistance of a Canada Council Travel grant, Vivian was a writer-in-residence at Can Serrat Artisit’s Center near Barcelona, Spain in November 2006 and she read at Shakespeare & Company in Paris, France November 27, 2006.
Vivian was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the Alberta Forestry Department for her courage in providing emergency services at a helicopter crash in 2006.
